Condensed from my Missions Course (2008).
When the disciples cast the net on their boat’s right side at Jesus’ command, why was the number of fish caught 153?
The disciples had toiled all night fishing with not a single catch. In the wee hours of the morning, Jesus appeared and called out from the beach asking if they had any food (any catch). When they said no, he said “Cast the net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.”
The result was a great catch and Peter dragged the net to land. Yet though it was full of large fish, the net was not broken. The total catch was 153 fish.
Perhaps the number 153 doesn’t mean anything but nothing included in scripture is insignificant. A zoologist has suggested that there are 153 families of fish in the world. Could it be that Jesus was saying that we are to fish for and bring in all the families of the world? And that if we do, the net (methods) we use for catching them will not fail? We cannot strain any net enough – whether by radio, TV, satellite, internet (blogging), public evangelism or personal witness – to bring in the catch for the kingdom.
One more point: because Jesus had directed them to cast their net on the right side, they must be presumed to have been fishing off the left side of the boat towards the deep. Thus it is significant that they got their catch when they cast their net towards shore. The right side of the boat would have faced Jesus. Also, Jesus’ side is always the “right” side.
